What is Quantum Physics?

Quantum Physics is the part of physics that describes the very smallest things in the universe, such as molecules, atoms, sub-atomic parts such as electrons, protons, and neutrons. It is fascinating because everybody around us, including us, is made from Quantum Physics.

Wave Particle Duality

Wave–particle duality is a concept in quantum mechanics which says that particles (light and matter) can be described as either a particle or a wave.

We can see wave-particle duality exists in nature. Under some experimental conditions, a particle appears to act as a particle, and under different experimental conditions, a particle appears to act a wave.

One of the most bizarre premises of quantum theory

Has long fascinated philosophers and physicists alike

By the very act of watching, the observer affects the observed reality.

Irrespective of the technology used

Interference (and wave behaviour of light) can only occur when no one is watching.

Once an observer begins to watch for which of the openings the particle is going through, the wave property switches off.

This happens because the light would give away the secret of its real nature.

The interference pattern also disappears in such a case.

The greater the amount of ‘watching’, the greater the observer’s influence on what actually takes place.

In an experiment conducted by the Weizmann Institute in Israel

The quantum “observer’s” capacity to detect electrons could be altered by changing its electrical conductivity, or the strength of the current passing through it.

When the ‘observer’s’ capacity to detect electrons increased, the interference weakened

When the ‘observer’s’ capacity to detect electrons was reduced, the interference increased.

The interference pattern adjusted itself just enough that the experiment would not be successful, as if mocking us
