Place Value System (Indian and International) explained with Examples

The other day I was helping my son with his math assignments and the topic was place values system. So, several numbers were provided and the student had to write it in complete words considering the place value system.

After I helped him with a couple of numbers, suddenly I realized that the commas looked different.

When I was in school, we were taught using just the Indian place value system, but it seems, kids nowadays are taught even the International place value system.

So, the lakh, ten-lakhs that I assumed to solve those problems were not correct, and my son had to redo it (obviously he was upset with me for having to do it again).

So, here we take a look at the two value system (Indian and International) and how the numbers are written differently using the two systems.

Things to remember

• The first three digits from the right are the same in both the systems (ones, tens, hundreds) and you put a comma after the first three digits
• Things change after the first three digits.
• In the Indian system, after the first three digits, you will have a comma after every 2 digits (thousands, ten-thousands, lakhs, ten-lakhs, crores, ten-crores, and so on)
• In the International system, you continue to group every three digits (thousands, ten-thousands, hundred-thousands, millions, ten-millions, hundred-millions, and so on)

Observe the commas, identify the place value system and write the numbers in words:

4,210,367: Four million, Two hundred and ten thousand, three hundred and sixty-seven (International place value system).

6,53,210 Six lakh, fifty three thousand, two hundred and ten (Indian place value).

73,42,630: Seventy Three lakh, forty two thousand, six hundred and thirty (Indian place value)

7,304,059: Seven million, three hundred and four thousand, and fifty nine (International place value system).

3,490: Three thousand four hundred and ninety (Applies to both systems).

653,210: Six hundred and fifty three thousand, two hundred and ten (International place value system).

2,11,875: Two lakh, eleven thousand, eight hundred and seventy five (Indian place value system).

Write the face value, place value of the digit 5 and the period it belongs to as per the International Place Value System.
