Here’s What Kids Should Learn in Kindergarten (K.G.)

Kindergarten children (aged 5 to 6 years) are at a stage where they are developing their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical abilities. Here are the topics that kindergarten children should ideally learn.

Kindergarten (abbreviated as K.G.) literally means “garden for the children” in German (‘garten’ means ‘garden’ in German language). Kindergarten (K.G.) is the year in school when kids (usually four to six-year-olds) are prepared for their first year of formal education.

Topics that 5-6 year old children should learn

In general, children in kindergarten should learn and practice basic concepts of reading, math, shapes, time and writing. You should encourage your five-year old to learn the following topics:

Language and Literacy

Children should be able to recognize and write the letters of the alphabet, form simple words and sentences, and understand basic grammar rules. They should also develop their listening and speaking skills in English and their primary language/s.

Phonics for Kids

In this method, children lean to speak English by matching the sounds of individual letters or groups of letters. Phonics lessons can be started for kids from age 4 years onwards. Improving Vocabulary

Improving vocabulary is an important part of a child’s language development as it enables them them to better express their thoughts, become effective communicators, improves their reading and writing skills.

The key to improving vocabulary is exposure and repetition.

Read to your child every day and encourage them to read on their own. Encourage your child to use new words in context and make it a fun and enjoyable experience.

Play word games with your child, such as Scrabble Junior, Boggle Junior, or Hangman.

Have conversations with your child about a variety of topics. Use words that might be new to them and explain their meanings.

Use flashcards or picture cards to teach new words. Make it a game by asking your child to guess the word based on the picture or definition.

Story Sequencing

Story sequencing is the process of arranging the various components of a story in their logical order. It involves identifying the beginning, middle, and end of a story or being able to retell the events in the correct sequence.

Visual story sequencing is often used in education and language development to help students develop their comprehension and communication skills.

Improve Grammar

Mathematics

Drawing for Kids

Children love to draw and use colours, so why not teach them some techniques that will make them draw better.

Kids can be taught drawing when they are around 5 years old, which will also their hand-eye coordination and self-expression.

The child will learn easy techniques on how to draw, including making cuddly animals.

Physical Education

Children should engage in physical activities that promote their motor skills and overall health, such as running, jumping, and playing team sports.

Social and Emotional Development

Children should learn to recognize and manage their emotions, develop empathy for others, and form positive relationships with their peers.

It is important to remember that every child is unique and may develop at their own pace, so you must provide them with the necessary support and individualized instruction to meet their specific needs. Let them also learn through observation from their environment, and from their friends through playtime.

Improve Handwriting

If you feel your child’s handwriting is not up to the mark but its only his first few months in school, then you should not worry. However, if it remains bad for an extended time, you will need to work on his handwriting and make them practice more.

Sometimes, its just a matter of holding the pencil correctly (most kids hold the pencil incorrectly when they begin).

Flash Cards

Flashcards help kids engage in active recall which teaches their brain to remember a term, concept, or process without context clues. You can teach children even complex concepts in a simplified format.

Parents and teachers can make their own flashcards for teaching at home or in the classroom.

• Use large and clear image/s on the front and detailed information on the back side.
• Use thick paper to make flashcards. These flashcards are great for kids learning games to build memory & concentration.

Object Talk for Kids

Object talk is a teaching method used by educators to develop speaking skills in children. It involves using a physical object or a visual aid that serves as the topic of the discussion and the child has to speak a few sentences about that object.

For example, for the Object Talk, the teachers might ask all the children to pick up any object with a specific colour.

So, if its “yellow day”, the child can talk about a banana, or a cap, or a yellow toy train, or a compass box, or any object that is yellow in colour.

There are plenty of topics on which students can talk – plastic, robots, dinosaurs, baby blades, flowers, etc.

For example, in the case of dinosaurs, your child can say that “Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago before they went extinct. They were fascinating creatures that roamed on earth. I have plenty of dinosaurs toys (and tell the names of various types of dinosaurs). I also like to see movies that are made on dinosaurs.”

You can build on that, and that should easily take a child 1-2 min to talk, which is sufficient for object talk.

When doing the object talk, make sure you ask your child to begin by introducing himself/herself and introducing the object, before moving on to the details of the object.

Also, don’t forget to have that object in the hand.

Improve Memory

Here are some techniques that you can use to improve your kids memory:

Encourage them to read more often; provide opportunities for activities like puzzles; teach them how to use mnemonic devices such as rhymes or acronyms; practice memorization techniques like visualization and repetition.

Visual Sequential Memory is about remembering and recollecting a set of objects, symbols, patterns, letters, numbers in the correct sequence. By practicing these games, children develop a strong memory on remembering phone numbers, names, events, day to day activities to encode and save in their memory.
