Grandparents
Me: Grandpa, how have the means of communication changed over the years?

Grandpa: When I was young, we used to write letters to communicate and to keep in touch with our dear ones. We would eagerly await letters from our dear ones. The postman used to deliver these letters to our house. In case of emergency, we would send telegrams.
Many years later, we had a telephone (landline) at the post-office, and there would be a long queue to make a call. It was faster and you could directly talk to the person at the other end.

Parents
Me: Mom, how have the means of communication changed over the years?
Mom: When I was young, telephone (landline) had just started becoming popular. There were phone booths all over, from where you could make calls.
Gradually, every home had a landline phone, as it became more of a necessity. People were no more writing letters.
 
Brother/Sister
Me: Didi, how have the means of communication changed over the years?
Sister: We had a landline phone at home which was used for regular communication. Soon our mom and dad started using mobile phones, which was easier to carry, and they could make calls (or receive calls) anytime, even while commuting.

Few years later, we got a desktop computer with internet, which allowed us to chat, send and receive emails.
Mom says even I will get a mobile phone once I start going to college.

Science

Mode of communication prevalent in India during our parent’s time:
1. Postal letters were commonly used for communication. People would often write letters to near and dears ones
2. Radio & television were also popular (communication was via news)
3. Telegram was used in emergency (it was fast but very expensive)
4. Later on Landline phones became very popular.

2) How the communication system changed over a period of time.
1. Cavemen used to gather around fire to discuss everyday activities
2. Pigeons were extensively used for long distance communication because of their homing ability (ability to come back home after travelling).
3. In ancient times, Kings used human messengers to pass messages.

4. Telegraphy (using electricity) was a huge breakthrough in the field of communication. Morse code is still used globally as a mode of communication
5. Decades later, Telegram was the fastest one to one communication method used by common people (in the late nineteenth century)
6. Landline telephone started becoming popular, and in the late twentieth century, almost every home had one telephone
7. Communication methods moved from wire-based to wireless
8. The Smartphone is a popular communication tool today
9. Internet based communication methods such as emails, chats and video conferencing are also popular today

3) What was the need to enhance the communication system?
1. Centuries back, communication methods were very slow; it used to take days for the information to reach to the other person.
2. Over a period of time, it became faster, but communication was not one-to-one.
3. Telephone remained a popular tool for communicating one-to-one for a long time. With better technology, communication system also started becoming cheaper
4. Modern communication methods offer convenience and flexibility

4) Which is the fastest mode of communication?
1. Telephone / mobile phone is the fastest mode of communication
2. Internet based methods such as emails are also quite fast.

5) What are the advantages of modern communication system?
Advantages of modern communication system:
1. They are much faster (instant)
2. They are one-to-one (talk to anyone, anywhere)
3. They are cheaper
4. They are convenient (most are wireless, and not wired)
5. They offer flexibility (you can chat, email, or talk)
