Science

Materials can be classified as metals and non-metals. Both, metals and non-metals are used widely in our daily lives. Metals differ from non-metals based on their physical and chemical properties.

Here are some main differences between metals and non-metals:

Lustrous: Metals are lustrous whereas non-metals have no lustre.

Malleability & ductility: Most metals are malleable and ductile whereas non-metals do not possess these properties.

Conductor of heat: Most metals are good conductors of heat and electricity. However, non-metals are poor conductors.

Metals and non-metals also react differently:

Some metals react with water to produce metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas. Generally, nonmetals do not react with water.

Metals react with oxygen in the presence of heat to produce metal oxides (basic in nature). Non-metals react with oxygen to produce non-metallic oxides (acidic in nature).

Metals react with acids and produce metal salts and hydrogen gas. Non-metals generally do not react with acids.

Some metals also react with bases to produce hydrogen gas.

More reactive metals tend to displace the less reactive metals from their compounds in aqueous solutions.

Projects

Q. Recall and list a few metallic and non-metallic minerals and ores about which you have learnt in class.

Q. Write the name of ores of Iron and Aluminium. (Chemical name and Formula).

Q. Write down the names of any two alloys of Iron and Aluminium, with their composition.

Q. State three uses of Iron and Aluminium in our day-to-day life.
