Agra Fort: Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Tourists go to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, but if you’re in Agra (and if you have time to spare), do checkout the Agra Fort. The 94-acre fort has a semicircular plan, and its walls are seventy feet high.

Agra Fort is the former imperial residence of the Mughal Dynasty. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site and is about 2.5 km from the the Taj Mahal.

Amer Fort: Jaipur, Rajasthan

Amer Fort is located in Amer, a town near Jaipur in Rajasthan. Located high on a hill, it’s a top tourist attraction near Jaipur.

Kumbhalgarh Fort: Rajsamand, Rajasthan

The perimeter walls of the Kumbhalgarh Fort (& Palace) extend up to 36 km, making it the second longest wall in the world (after the Great Wall of China). Built on a hilltop in the Aravalli range, there are over 360 temples within the fort, around 300 are ancient Jain and the rest are Hindu temples.

From the palace top, you get a nice view of the Aravalli Range (range of mountains in western India). You can also see the sand dunes of the Thar Desert from the fort walls.

Chittorgarh Fort (Chittor Fort): Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

Chittorgarh Fort sprawls majestically over a hill by the Berach River. The fort used to be the capital of Mewar. The fort has been declared a World Heritage Site. The fort houses historical palaces, temples and prominent commemoration towers.

Daulatabad Fort: Aurangabad, Maharashtra

The Devagiri-Daulatabad fort carries the distinction of remaining undefeated in all its battles. Its located in Daulatabad town (also known as Devagiri).

Golconda Fort: Hyderabad

The Golconda Fort complex spreads across 11 km area. Golkonda fort has a number of royal apartments and halls, temples, mosques, stables, inside. You can get a glimpse of its architectural beauty in several of the pavilions, gates, entrances and domes.

Gwalior Fort: Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh

Gwalior Fort is an 8th-century hill fort near Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, central India. The fort includes two main palaces, Gujari Mahal and Man Mandir, built by Man Singh Tomar. A small river, the Swarnrekha, flows close to the palace.

Jaisalmer Fort: Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Declared a World Heritage Site, the Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest fully preserved fortified cities in the world. Its among the largest desert forts of the world. Its also known as Sonar Quila (or the Golden Fort) of Rajasthan.

Jhansi Fort: Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh

Jhansi Fort is situated on a large hilltop called Bangira, in Uttar Pradesh. To Indians, the Jhansi Fort is best remembered for the spirited fight put up by Rani Lakshmibai against the British in 1857. That is why its also popularly known as ‘Rani Jhansi ka Quila (fort)’.

Junagarh Fort: Bikaner, Rajasthan

Junagarh Fort (built by Raja Rai Singh) was originally called Chintamani and was renamed Junagarh (means “Old Fort”) in the early 20th century. The fort looks imposing and overwhelms you with its historic charm and monumental splendor. The fort interiors has beautiful painting work on the walls and its roofs.

Kangra Fort: Kangra, Himachal Pradesh

The Kangra Fort (also known as Nagarkot or Kot Kangra) is located 20 kilometers from Dharamsala, a popular tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh, India.

This fort has been subjected to countless attacks, and was famous for the storage of riches (Mahmud Gaznavi, after defeating Punjab, directly came to Kangra in his fourth expedition to India).

The colossal buildings of the fort have been reduced to ruins especially after the earthquake of 1905.

Mehrangarh Fort: Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Mehrangarh Fort (built by Rao Jodha) is situated 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. The magnificent craftsmanship of the Jodhpuri craftsmen can be seen in the fascinating sandstone palaces within the Mehrangarh Fort.
