Municipal Corporation now expect bigger housing societies and commercial complexes to manage their waste themselves, which is making housing societies take the necessary steps.
Societies have started installing waste management setup in their own premises. It involves three-way segregation of waste — organic, dry and reject garbage — at individual level. Then, recycled dry waste through local NGOs and wet waste through composting. Also, most of the societies are using the manure generated from organic waste at their own gardens.

Several NGOs have also started making housing societies aware of the benefits of treating waste.
Each community has at least a few residents who want to do the right thing for their society and devote their time and energy to a good cause, they bring about a positive change in the neighbourhood. All they are looking for is some hand-holding, guidance and knowledge related to waste management. Such residents and the efforts of such NGOs serve as a catalyst to make communities waste free.
‘It shouldn’t be only societies’ responsibility – the authority should also make people aware about waste-disposal systems.

Waste Processing Centres
Civic bodies are setting up waste processing centres to segregate and recycle dry waste.
These material recovery centres will collect, segregate and recycle the city’s plastic and dry waste.
In most cities, NGOs collect the city’s dry waste which is then taken to segregation centres where the waste is sorted. Civic officials from the Solid Waste Management department however are of the opinion that the NGO workers are not able to collect all the dry waste generated by the city.
Instead of selling different types of plastic and dry waste to individual vendors, the BMC hopes that bringing in contractors will help process dry waste on a large scale. “It’ll be a commercial model and an assembly plant will be created where the dry waste will be sorted and baled. The contractors that have shown an interest in the project have connections with other companies that manufacture cement and dry waste can be used as fuel,” said an official.
