A vs. An (When to use what, differences)

If English is your mother tongue or if you have studied from a good school, you would already know when to use ‘A’ and when to use ‘An’.

But there are many who get confused, despite being graduates (I’m not joking), but then not every one in India has studied in an English medium school so I guess its okay.

And its not difficult to understand the difference, and when to use one over the other.

• The article A is used before singular, countable nouns which begin with consonant sounds.
• The article AN is used before singular, countable nouns which begin with vowel sounds (vowels are a,e,i,o,u).

And here are some examples to help you understand better.

He is a teacher. He is an English teacher.

I saw a tiger at the zoo. I saw an Elephant at the zoo.

A boy was playing in the kitchen with an apple.
